Ontario: the largest boiler market, and the most crowded quote table

Ontario has the most homes, a large gas-heated base and a propane segment, so boiler demand is broad. Generous heat pump rebates and crowded search results mean install pricing and tracking decide who profits.

Ontario is Canada's largest market for almost everything, boilers included, and that cuts both ways. There are more buyers and more searches, but also more competitors, higher click costs and well-funded heat pump rebates sitting on the same quote table. Unit economics decide who profits here.

The market and the buyers

Statistics Canada's 2023 survey puts natural gas as the main heating energy in 58% of Ontario homes, electricity in 18% and propane in 4%. The propane share is small in percentage terms but meaningful in rural areas, where it shapes a distinct boiler market with different fuel costs and service routes.

Demand concentrates in Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, London and the cities around them. In big-city search results, a boiler company is rarely the only bidder, so broad terms tend to be expensive and close-rate improvements are especially valuable.

Climate and seasonality

The Great Lakes take some of the edge off winter in the south of the province; the north gets a longer, harder season. In practice:

  • In the south, the shoulder seasons are longer, which suits agreement and tune-up campaigns when click costs ease.
  • In the north, the season is longer and harsher, which raises the value of agreement members and the urgency of repair calls.
  • Everywhere, the first cold weeks of the season bring the steepest rise in search costs, so planned-replacement marketing works best before then.

Regulators to know

We link these for your own reading; we do not give compliance advice.

  • TSSA covers fuels (natural gas, propane and fuel oil) and boilers and pressure vessels. Only TSSA-registered fuels contractors may do fuels work, using certified G1, G2 or G3 gas technicians.
  • ESA covers electrical safety and contractor licensing.
  • WSIB handles workplace insurance, and Skilled Trades Ontario handles trade certification.
  • Consumer Protection Ontario is relevant to in-home sales and contracts.

Displaying TSSA registration on install pages is a simple trust signal for buyers comparing several quotes.

Programs relevant to boiler economics

As of October 2026, the main Ontario programs centre on heat pumps and efficiency measures. Confirm each with Save on Energy before mentioning it.

  • The Home Renovation Savings Program, delivered by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas with provincial support, lists rebates of up to $7,500 for a cold-climate air source heat pump and up to $12,000 for ground source, among other measures.
  • The Energy Affordability Program offers free upgrades to income-eligible households, including a stream for oil-heated homes that is described as available for a limited time.
  • No federal Greener Homes Affordability agreement had been signed with Ontario when we checked in October 2026.

These programs matter to a boiler company because buyers arrive with a subsidised alternative in mind. A boiler quote has to explain clearly why it suits a home with existing hydronic distribution, or a buyer who values the comfort and hot-water performance of a combi.

The local business mix

For an Ontario heating company that has served its area for years, the cheapest growth often sits in the existing customer base: agreements, renewals and repair-to-replacement follow-up, rather than in buying more broad search traffic.

How we would approach marketing in Ontario

  1. Track before scaling. In a costly search market, unit-economics tracking is the difference between spending and investing.
  2. Bid narrowly. Fund specific boiler-type, brand and neighbourhood searches that clear their ceilings, and starve broad ones that do not.
  3. Answer the heat pump question on install pages. Our install pricing service builds comparison content that respects buyers' intelligence.
  4. Work the existing base. Agreements and renewals through service agreement programs are often the cheapest units to win.

Ontario owners can also look at HVAC.Digital, a Sedighi.ca brand that serves Ontario within the HVAC.Agency family. Boiler.Business is a marketing service, not an Ontario contractor. See the areas overview for other provinces.

Frequently asked questions

Who regulates boiler and gas work in Ontario?

TSSA covers fuels such as natural gas, propane and fuel oil, as well as boilers and pressure vessels. Only TSSA-registered fuels contractors may carry out fuels work, using certified gas technicians. Check TSSA directly for requirements.

Do Ontario rebates cover boilers?

The Save on Energy programs we checked focus on heat pumps, thermostats, insulation and similar measures rather than fuel-fired boilers. Confirm current terms with Save on Energy before mentioning any rebate.

Is Ontario too competitive for a small boiler company?

Not necessarily. Competition raises the cost of broad searches, but specific searches for boiler types, brands and local areas can still clear their ceilings. Tracking shows which ones do.
