Where we work

British Columbia: two climates, one province, very different boiler maths

In BC, the mild southwest coast and the colder Interior behave like separate boiler markets. Natural gas heats 42% of households and electricity 36%, so boiler quotes compete hard with heat pumps, and agreements carry much of the value.

British Columbia is where Boiler.Business is based, and it is also the province where averages mislead most. A boiler company in Vancouver and one in Prince George share a regulator and a tax system, but very little else in their unit economics. Plan the coast and the Interior as separate ledgers.

The market and the buyers

BC buyers split along fuel and geography. Statistics Canada's 2023 survey has natural gas as the main heating energy in 42% of BC homes and electricity in 36%. That means a large gas-heated base that can buy a boiler or combi, and a large electric base that is far more likely to choose a heat pump.

Where a home already has hydronic heating, the owner is choosing between a like-for-like boiler and a different system altogether, and your marketing has to make that comparison easy. In the colder Interior, a failed boiler in January is an emergency, so response time can matter more than polished price presentation.

Climate and seasonality

The southwest coast has mild, wet winters, while the Interior and the North face much colder and longer heating seasons. For economics, that has three effects:

  • On the coast, the heating season is gentler, so repair spikes are smaller and agreements carry more of the year's value.
  • In the Interior and North, breakdown demand is sharper, repair contribution can be higher, and replacement decisions are often made quickly.
  • Province-wide, the shoulder months are the cheapest time to sell agreements and tune-ups, because search costs for urgent heating terms fall.

Regulators to know

We link these so you can read their requirements yourself; we do not give compliance advice.

  • Technical Safety BC oversees natural gas and propane, boilers and pressure vessels, and electrical work, and it licenses gas and electrical contractors.
  • SkilledTradesBC administers Skilled Trades Certification, which applies to gasfitters (A and B) and steamfitter/pipefitters among other trades.
  • WorkSafeBC covers workplace safety and insurance.
  • Consumer Protection BC is worth knowing for consumer-facing contract and sales questions.

Licensing matters to marketing in one practical way: buyers can check credentials, and showing your licence status clearly on install pages removes an objection before the quote.

Programs relevant to boiler economics

As of October 2026, the provincial programs we verified mainly support heat pumps and envelope upgrades rather than fuel-fired boilers.

  • The CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program is income-qualified and changed for invoices dated on or after July 6, 2026, with some rebates removed and tighter eligibility.
  • Under the federal Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, a June 29, 2026 agreement includes no-cost retrofits through BC Hydro, plus dual-fuel and other measures through FortisBC for around 1,000 households.

The economic point is competitive: a subsidised heat pump quote changes the price a boiler quote is measured against, especially among income-qualified buyers. Confirm details with the program administrator before mentioning any of this in your marketing.

The local business mix

Where boilers are one line inside a wider HVAC business, their economics are easily blended with furnace and air-conditioning work. That is the situation the GasBoilers.ca model addressed: a gas-boiler division built for CANRO Heat, serving 26+ BC communities, with its own brand, pages and tracking. The results page explains what that separation showed.

How we would approach marketing in BC

  1. Split the ledger by geography. Separate ceilings for coastal and Interior work, because close rates, urgency and agreement value differ.
  2. Lead with agreements on the coast. Use the service agreement programs to build a member base that fills the long shoulder season.
  3. Lead with response and repair in the Interior. Fund urgent no-heat and brand-specific repair searches, guided by parts and repair margins.
  4. Present install prices with the heat pump comparison in mind. Buyers will have seen one; your install pricing should explain clearly why a boiler suits their home.

We are a marketing service, not a contractor; we never install or service equipment in BC or anywhere else.

Frequently asked questions

Is BC a good market for boiler companies?

It can be, but it is not one market. Coastal demand is gentler and heat pumps compete strongly; the Interior and North have longer, colder seasons. Plan each area's economics separately.

Who regulates gas and boiler work in BC?

Technical Safety BC covers natural gas, boilers and pressure vessels, and licenses gas contractors. SkilledTradesBC handles trade certification. Read their requirements directly; we do not give compliance advice.

Do CleanBC rebates help boiler installs?

The CleanBC programs we checked focus on heat pumps and envelope upgrades rather than fuel-fired boilers, and the Energy Savings Program changed in July 2026. Confirm current terms with Better Homes BC before mentioning any rebate.
