Manitoba: a long season that makes every agreement member count

Manitoba's heating season is among the longest in southern Canada, and natural gas heats about half of households. That raises the value of agreements and repairs, while active heat pump programs shape what boiler quotes compete against.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

In Manitoba, the length of winter changes the arithmetic. A long heating season gives every agreement member more value, every repair more urgency, and every replacement decision more weight. It also makes heat pump programs a real factor in what a boiler quote has to beat.

The market and the buyers

In 2023, by Statistics Canada's count, natural gas was the main heating energy in 52% of Manitoba homes and electricity in 33%. That gives a boiler company a solid gas-heated base, and a meaningful electrically heated one where conversion or replacement decisions are often influenced by programs.

Winnipeg holds most of the province's demand. Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler and Portage la Prairie are smaller markets with longer drives between jobs, while Thompson in the north faces even longer winters and higher travel costs.

Climate and seasonality

Manitoba's prairie winters are long and very cold, and the heating season is among the longest in southern Canada. For unit economics, three effects follow:

  • Agreement value rises with the length of the season, because members draw on service and repairs over more months.
  • Repair contribution is protected by urgency. In deep cold, buyers choose the company that answers first, not the cheapest advertised price.
  • The planning window is short. Planned replacements and agreement sign-ups are easiest to win before the first hard cold, so campaigns must start early.

Programs relevant to boiler economics

As of October 2026, Manitoba's verified programs centre on heat pumps and energy retrofits. Confirm every detail with the administrator before mentioning it.

  • Efficiency Manitoba's Air Source Heat Pump Rebate lists $2,000 for a centrally ducted cold-climate unit or $1,500 for ductless, in existing primary residences.
  • The Affordable Home Energy Program lists a free heat pump for qualifying homes heated by electric furnaces, baseboards or electric boilers, installed by a registered program contractor. Its eligibility details were not re-confirmed.
  • Manitoba was the first province with a Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program agreement, announced in September 2025 and delivered by Efficiency Manitoba.
  • Manitobans could apply to the federal oil-to-heat-pump grant only until July 31, 2026; it is now closed.

For boiler economics, these programs mostly shape competition. A buyer with an electric boiler who qualifies for a free heat pump is unlikely to pay for a boiler replacement, so marketing aimed at that segment will see low close rates. Knowing that lets you set realistic ceilings, or aim elsewhere.

The local business mix

A Manitoba heating company may serve both gas and electric customers, and some take part in program delivery as registered contractors. Where that applies, program work and private boiler work have different economics and should be tracked separately, so neither subsidises the other without your knowing.

An illustrative Manitoba check

Suppose, purely for illustration, that a Winnipeg company signs agreement members at $260 a year and that a long season raises member repair work above what a coastal company would see. If renewals hold at 80%, the average member stays about five years, so even a modest annual contribution compounds into a figure worth real marketing spend. Run the break-even worksheet with your own numbers before deciding how much to invest in sign-ups.

How we would approach marketing in Manitoba

  1. Make agreements the core of the plan. Use the service agreement programs to grow members ahead of each winter.
  2. Segment by fuel. Gas-heated homes and electric-boiler homes respond to very different messages and have different close rates.
  3. Fund urgent repair searches in cold months, guided by parts and repair margins.
  4. Track program and private work separately through unit-economics tracking.

We are a marketing service, not a Manitoba contractor, and we never install or service equipment. See the areas overview for other regions.

Frequently asked questions

Why are agreements especially valuable in Manitoba?

A long, very cold heating season gives each member more chances to need service and repairs, and a breakdown matters more. The arithmetic in our break-even guide tends to favour agreements where winters run long.

Who oversees boilers and gas work in Manitoba?

The Office of the Fire Commissioner's Inspection and Technical Services handles gas and oil burner permits and licensing, and the inspection and certification of most boilers and pressure vessels. Check its requirements directly.

Do Manitoba programs affect electric boiler homes?

Efficiency Manitoba lists an Affordable Home Energy Program that offers a free heat pump to qualifying homes heated by electric furnaces, baseboards or electric boilers. Its eligibility details were not re-confirmed, so check with Efficiency Manitoba.
